Where will the story go?

Choose a genre. Add one counting word when it is your turn. Helper words such as “by” and “the” are free. Every third contribution lets you add two counting words.

How to play

These helper words are free: they appear in the story and its totals, but do not use up your turn's one- or two-word allowance.

Playing Word by Word

Choose an active story and add to it when it is your turn. You cannot contribute twice in a row. Most turns allow one word; every third successful turn allows two.

You may add helper words around your main word, so “by the river” uses one turn word. You can also submit only helper words. Every word you submit still appears in the story and counts in story and contributor totals.

Tap any story word to see who added it. Once a story has 50 words, its top contributors can rename it. At 300 words, players can propose ending it; another contributor must second that proposal.
